Eddyville residents told to shelter after chemical spill

Citizens of Eddyville are being told to shelter in situ while authorities assess a hazardous material incident. The Wapello County Sheriff’s Office said an event involving hazardous materials at the Ajinomoto plant near Eddyville. HAZMAT experts are currently assessing things, as of the newest update shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday.

While that assessment is happening, residents of the town are advised to shelter in situ inside their homes with windows closed and await further information. Travel on Highway 137, Monroe Wapello road, and Highway 63N/163 could also be impacted because the situation unfolds. Authorities have also been staging along various county roads to limit travel.

It was not immediately clear what hazardous materials are involved, what proportion of the risks they carry. Ajinomoto may be a company that focuses on creating additives commonly utilized in food, like MSG (MSG) and umami.
