Wyo. (KUTV) — A body that’s “consistent” with the outline of Gabby Petito was found Sunday in Grand Teton Park, Wyoming, where she was last known to be, officials said. The explanation for death has not been determined at this point . Officials said at a news conference Sunday evening there’s an ongoing investigation within the area and that they ask the general public to stay their distance. At this point, they need not confirmed that their discovery is definitively Petito but her family has been notified. Gabrielle “Gabby” Petito was last seen in Grand Teton Park, Wyoming. Nichole Schmidt, Petito’s mother, said the last text she received from her daughter was on Aug. 30.

On Sept. 11, Petito’s family reported Gabby missing once they were unable to contact her. Petito’s father posted on social media that his daughter had last been seen traveling to Yellowstone Park from Salt Lake City. According to her social media posts, Petito and her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, had begun a cross-country tour during a Ford Transit. Many of her posts included the hashtag vanlife. Laundry returned home to Florida on Sept. 1, ten days before Petito was reported missing by her family.

He hired an attorney and refused to speak publicly about what happened. Police said the van the couple traveled in was recovered in North Port, Florida. Petito, who is from NY, lived in North Port with Laundrie and his parents. On Sept. 17, police visited the Laundrie home when the family’s attorney revealed that Brian’s whereabouts were unknown. a politician search began in Florida for Laundrie because the one in Wyoming continued for Petito, capturing more national interest within the case. Steven Bertolino, a replacement York-based attorney, and counsel for Laundrie’s family shared the subsequent statement with 2News on Sept. 14:

This is understandably a particularly difficult time for both the Petito family and therefore the Laundrie family. it’s our understanding that an inquiry has been organized for Miss Petito in or near Grand Teton Park in Wyoming. On behalf of the Laundry family, it’s our hope that the look for Miss Petito is successful which Miss Petito is reunited together with her family. On the recommendation of counsel the Laundrie family is remaining within the background at this juncture and can haven’t any further comment.

Police stated Laundrie’s lack of data was “hindering this investigation.” “The answers will eventually begin,” officials added. “We will help find Gabby and that we will help find anyone who could also be involved in her disappearance.” Regarding Laundrie being named an individual of interest, Bertolino said, “This formality has not really changed the circumstances of Mr. Laundrie being the main target and a spotlight of enforcement and Mr. Laundrie will still remain silent on the recommendation of counsel.”

Ellis Maxwell, a retired West Valley City policeman who was the lead investigator on the Susan Powell disappearance, told 2News this case is “very concerning and clearly very suspicious.” Maxwell said Laundrie’s refusal to speak immediately raises suspicion that he’s involved, but that would mean anything. “There’s a myriad of various accidents that would happen ,” Maxwell said, “but again, why would you not talk?”
