Warriors star Stephen Curry’s parents are splitting up as Curry’s mother, Sonya Curry, has reportedly filed for divorce from her husband Dell. The Curry couple confirmed the news Monday to People Magazine after TMZ first reported on the split.
“After exploring an attempt separation over the past year and far thoughtful consideration, we’ve decided to finish our marriage. As this comes with an excellent deal of sadness, our focus and desire is for our family’s continued happiness,” Sonya and Dell told the magazine. “We are so thankful for all the various blessings and successes! We stay committed to and supportive of our youngsters and grandchildren and can remain on connected paths. We ask that our privacy be respected and pray for our family as we move forward.”
The paperwork was filed in June and therefore the divorce proceedings are ongoing, consistent with the report that cites North Carolina court records. Details about why Sonya, 55, and Dell, 57, are splitting up are unclear.
The two first met as student-athletes at Virginia Tech and were married in 1988, shortly after Dell was drafted to the NBA in 1986. He went on to play until 2002 and made a reputation for himself as a talented shooter with the Jazz, Cavaliers, Hornets, Bucks, and Raptors. Sonya was a star player at Virginia Tech.
